On March 15, 2023, Chase’s life took an unexpected turn when he began experiencing flu-like symptoms that persisted for over three weeks. Initially, doctors tested him for various illnesses, including COVID-19, flu, and bronchitis. However, when his fevers persisted, bloodwork revealed a shocking diagnosis – at just 15 years old, Chase was diagnosed with T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The diagnosis came as a surprise, and Chase’s journey towards healing began immediately at Nemours Children’s Hospital, Delaware.

Before starting treatment at Nemours Children’s, Chase’s life was filled with sickness and uncertainty. He had been unwell for weeks, unable to attend school or participate in the activities he loved. A promising spot on the JV baseball team slipped through his fingers, and he was isolated from family and friends during a three-week stay at the PICU.

Chase’s path to recovery has been filled with numerous medical procedures. He underwent a chest tube placement, PICC line insertion, kidney dialysis, port placement, CT scans, MRIs, NG tube, and EKGs. These procedures are essential steps on his journey to beating leukemia.

Chase’s journey was made more bearable by the incredible team at Nemours. Despite his initial apprehension, the doctors, nurses, and clinicians demonstrated remarkable patience and provided steadfast support. Chase fondly remembers Emily and Colin, PICU nurses who went above and beyond for him and his family. Pediatric hematologist/oncologist Renee Gresh, DO, and Stephanie Howe Guarino, MD, with nurse practitioner Mackenzie Stewart, APN, made the best decisions for his treatment, ensuring he received the care he needed.

Chase’s family has been a pillar of strength throughout his journey. They eagerly anticipate his full recovery and the joyous moments they will share once treatment is complete. Their patience, love, and support have played a crucial role in Chase’s healing.

A big celebration is on the horizon for Chase and his family when he completes his treatment. They are eager to put this challenging chapter behind them and look forward to a future filled with health and happiness. Their outlook remains positive, and they continue to stand by Chase’s side as he heals and recovers.

Chase’s advice to fellow patients facing a similar journey is simple yet powerful: “Never back down and never give up! Think about the hardest thing you’ve done and if you can do that, then you can get through this.”

Chase’s journey is a testament to the human spirit’s resilience and the importance of support from loved ones and medical professionals. As he continues to fight his battle against leukemia, we stand with Chase, eagerly awaiting the day he can share his story of full recovery.
